A sad state of affairs
Whether you love or hate the mass migration of every possible SFX to CGI, this news from the Hollywood Reporter is sad, indeed.
Film needs giant talents such as Mr. Baker, and the geniuses at Stan Winston’s shop. While it’s tempting to draw parallels between the death of practical effects and that of analog film, The situation is completely different. While film is best left in bins labeled “nostalgia”, practical special effects have a, well, practical benefit. They add to performance and world building in a manner that effects added later in post can’t.
On behalf of the millions of people who have enjoyed the films made better by your work…thank you Mr. Baker for the blood, sweat and tears you’ve put into obvious labors of love. You, and your creations, will not be forgotten.
